The Friends have a busy events programme to engage members and non-members alike, including outings and a holiday, as well as various events within the Cathedral and Close to which all are very welcome. Any small profit made goes towards our funds to support Salisbury Cathedral. We have tickets for most events which are bookable in advance or can be bought on the door – but please check with the office beforehand, just in case we are sold out!!
The library and archives building was opened in 2010 by Rowan Williams and houses over 100,000 books. It includes a number of specialist collections, medieval manuscripts, early printed books and works by recusant Catholics. The archive has artefacts and documents dating back to the 17th century and now houses the library once in the care of our own Benedictine monks here in Salisbury.
The Abbey itself is part of the English Benedictine Congregation dating from 1215 making it the oldest of the 21 congregations that together form the Benedictine Confederation, which equates to what is loosely termed the Order of Benedict. After the suppression of the monasteries in England, English monks pursued their vocation on the Continent but in 1607 the ancient foundation was re-formed. At present there are 13 independent monasteries, 10 of monks and 3 of nuns, all living by the Rule of Benedict, which dates from the 6th century. The very first word in the Rule is “Listen”, and listening is the mark of a monk’s life. The Benedictines are renowned for their hospitality, so we will have coffee/tea and homemade biscuits on arrival, a guided tour and talk in the library, and a tour of the church followed by the short midday office. Then we will have Lunch which includes home grown produce, and conclude with some
free time to enjoy the grounds before returning to Salisbury.
